Do As You Likeys

By now, the other boys had found poles and sticks to beat us with. They were surrounding us, and nonchalant young men were standing by watching. The pacing steed had been replaced by a manic squad bike that was running circles around me and Jessamy. While I was fending off Jonathan, Jessamy was protecting the awning that the boys were pulling down. In despair she turned to a man who had stuck his head out of a neighbouring caravan.

"What can I do to stop these children tormenting us?" she asked

"Pack up and go", he said.

Ever wondered what would happen if someone from the straight world pulled their caravan up on a traveller site ? I've lived in the country long enough to be frankly amazed that anyone would try it. Nowt as queer as folk.

Travellers, as we all know, are very poor people and subject to the most dreadful discrimination.

Fascinating article by Emily Kingham - depressing, yet at the same time, not that suprising.

We shouldn't forget that Brendon Fearon and that "lovable rogue" Fred Barras came from the same discriminated against ethnic minority.

"Ella Langham, chairman of the fair joint committee, said: "There have been far fewer serious incidents - last year there was a stabbing. "

Oh well, I guess things are looking up, as this year has only produced a horse-drowning & serious head injuries..!

Maybe they're "very poor people" because they don't work?

Aren't Travellers an example of why discrimination is perfectly acceptable?

It is surely ok to discriminate against any self-selecting bunch of people.

For example, i would not employ a neo-Nazi or a Satanist.

However, it is wrong to discriminate against people because of characteristics they are born with - skin colour, eye colour, sex, sexual orientation for example.

Travellers live a life of crime and welfare. This is not an opinion but a fact.

They have the option to leave this life for a more productive one.

Until they do, i will discriminate against them.

I take your point, Pommygranate, but I reserve the right to discriminate against anyone the hell I feel like discriminating against. For example, fat people are disgusting - OK, they are also self-selecting.

But if I don't want to be friendly with someone because they have red hair, that is my absolute right. It may be surpassingly stupid, but it is not a legal matter under British laws.

The one-worlder government, also known as the one-worlder kindergarten, wants to select my friends and associates. Oh, wait a minute! No, it doesn't! Because there should be no selection!

Everyone has to like everyone in the magical world of the One Worlder government!

English Law leaves considerable discretion to judges for some vague cultural reasons. Art 14 is a wide-ranging article which can be interpreted in many ways.

English Judges are in the position of being able to make law as they feel simply because Parliament has started implementing vague statutes. There was no reason to reproduce the ECHR word-for-word in English Law which may give interpretations that the Strasbourg court itself would not accept

It is time parliamentary draftsmen started using language with much more precision and issuing explanatory guides as to parliamentary intent with legislation.

It is preposterous that the personal prejudices of lawyers wearing wigs can be given legal force simply because they are only to be subject to review by other judges if people can fund an appeal

They do a nice trade in lead-acid batteries which can be "liberated" from the equipment cubicles at the base of cellular radio antenae using bolt-cutters, angle-grinders and chain-saws.

For your own safety please don't consider trying to confront any pikeys you see trying to break into a such an installation as dealing with a dozen agressive gypsies with power tools can be injurious to your health.

Gosh, I wonder where they got the money to buy bolt-cutters, angle-grinders and chain-saws. Surely all were purchased legitimately?

Oh, no worries 'anon'. Taking the term in its US sense, I just thought it was a comment on house price rises.... ;)
